The controversy surrounding the proposed closure of Ballingeary Post Office has now become an election issue in Cork North West. Protests by locals has been ongoing over the last number of weeks after An Post announced that it was downgrading the local post office after the local postmaster announced retirement. An post will not replace the post master but instead offer a limited service in the area. This will mean that locals will no longer be able to pay their dog licences or tv licences. However vital services such as the pension service will be retained. An post will not hire a replacement on a wage as they feel that Inchigeela post office, which is 9 kilometers away is sufficient and there is not enough business in the rural town to justify a full time post office. Instead the post office will be paid on a per transaction basis.
Locals have reacted angrily to the news and have got local representatives involved in order to save the post office. Today Fine Gael TD Michael Creed wrote to An Post asking them to reconsider, pointing out that the Gaeltacht area needs it post-office “I would appeal to you to revisit this decision to downgrade services to Ballingeary. Ballingeary is unique in that it is a Gaeltacht village with different needs to that of non-Gaeltacht areas.” There is little doubt that a vibrant Gaeltacht is necessary in order to keep these regions alive.
The post office closure is now sure to be a key issue for voters in the Ballingeary area, one of Corks few mainland Gaeltacht area’s remaining.

Fine Gael Galway West TD Padraig McCormack has finally announced that he will not be standing in the next General Election. The sitting TD and chairperson of the parliamentary party, failed to get the support of the Fine Gael membership at the selection convention in recent weeks and was thus deselected from standing for the party. Fine Gael headquarters offered the sitting TD the option of being added to the ticket, however McCormack has now decided to accept the wishes of the party membership and not contest the upcoming election.
Senator Fidelma Healy Eames and Councillor Brian Walsh were the two candidates selected at the party’s convention. It is still rumoured that the senior party may yet add two Gealtacht based candidates in order to counter-act the vote of Minister Eamon O’Cuiv, probably Cllr Sean Kyne and Seosamh O’ Laoi both based in Conamara. They collectively got in excess of 3,000 votes at the locals last year.
Fine Gael is aiming to win two seats in Galway West in the upcoming election. Fidelma Healy Eames will be expected to win a seat comfortably. However Brian Walsh is going to have to work very hard to win the final seat. If Cllr Sean Kyne is added to the ticket, it may very well mean that he may out-poll Walsh as he did in last years locals.
For McCormack, he can now look forward to his retirement after being a TD for 21 years. He offered the local party his best wishes “I wish the selected candidates and whoever will now be added to the ticket every success in the Election and with the unpopularity of the Government I believe we can win two seats to ensure that Fine Gael will form the next Government in the difficult years ahead for our country”
His departure now means that at least 20 sitting TD’s will now not be running for the next Dáil. Expect this to increase with Mary Harney and Bertie Ahern yet to decide on the future in politics.

Fine Gael TD for Cavan/Monaghan Seymour Crawford has announced that he intends to retire at the next General Election. Crawford was first elected in 1992 and has held several positions in the areas of agriculture and food, social and family affairs and environment. He said today that it is time for the younger generation to come forward to lead the economic recovery.
The constituency of Cavan/ Monaghan is expected to be one where Fine Gael is expecting to win a second seat out of the available five. Senator Joe O’Reilly is expected to be one of the two candidates. The second name on the ticket may be a local Coucillor Heather Humphreys, Hugh McElvaney or Owen Bannigan.
Crawford joins a long list of current TD’s who are stepping down including Jim O’Keeffe, Paddy Sheehan, Paul Connaughton, Liz McManus, Olwyen Enright, Arthur Morgan and many more to come. (One has to expect the likes of Mary Harney etc to hang up their boots in the coming weeks)
This means that the next Dáil will have a whole range of new faces. Hopefully, it will make it younger, leaner and better!

Fine Gael to “Reinvent Government” November 7, 2010

Fine Gael, this morning has unveiled its public sector reform policy. The policy which is the brainchild of Richard Bruton promises to abolish 145 state bodies along with the HSE. The policy plans to save an impressive €5 billion through confronting duplication and waste within our public service.
It also confirms that Fine Gael will over turn current Government policy and return to the old system for Freedom of Information.
“Unless there is a fundamental change in the way Government does its business, it will continue to be part of the problem rather than the solution. We need a Public Service that is smaller, better and one that gets things done. Through the systems and plans outlined in “Reinventing Government”, Fine Gael will make that happen.” Richard Bruton, shadow Minister on Enterprise with responsibility for Public Sector Reform.
This policy, from just glancing at the initial pages appears to be the single best policy produced by the Fine Gael party. It promises Government will be “smaller, cheaper, better”
Analysis to follow this evening.

Tonight’s Red C poll commissioned on behalf of the Sunday Business Post has confirmed every Fianna Fáil TD’s worst nightmare- whitewash. The poll placed the republicans on just 18%, the lowest percentage ever recorded on a Red C poll. The poll leaves the party shattered and in serious trouble. If the party received support levels like these in a General Election, it would leave the party with only about 30 seats. That would be a loss of about 40 seats and with very little TD’s left in Dublin.
Fine Gael top’s the poll at 32%, up 1% since last month. The party will be pleased that it is regaining support and momentum after a challenging Summer. If the party received this level of support in a General Election, it would result in the party returning to the Dáil with at least 60 seats. Fine Gael would be the largest party with Enda Kenny as Taoiseach. This poll more or less saves Enda Kenny’s career. For pressure has been mounting in recent weeks and it was highly speculated that if this poll failed to impress it would end Kenny’s time as leader of the most popular party in Ireland. However to be fair to Kenny, I do believe he is underrated. There is no doubt he will bring honesty and integrity back to Irish politics. There is also little doubt, that he is aware of how serious a crisis we are in. He is also ready for election “ The coming months will be the most exciting time in Irish politics in my lifetime. It will be a time for truth, for honour, and above all, for courage.” Fine Gael and Enda Kenny must now build on this percentage and continue to offer an alternative to the current Government.
Labour find them selves on 27%. This percentage will be decisive, for unless Labour push above 30%, they will struggle to win the second seats where they wish to do so. Nevertheless, they will be relatively pleased with this poll. However, the breakdown of Labour’s vote, shows that they have the greatest undecided voter who may potentially swing anywhere. This must be a worry for the policy-less party who may struggle to keep these voters if a General Election was upon us. If Labour did manage 27%, it would leave them with about 50 seats.
As expected, this poll suggested that Sinn Féin will win a seat in both Donegal Constituencies but will struggle elsewhere. The poll placed them on 9% nationally. However in Donegal South- West, where a Bye-Election is looming, it placed them on 31.8%, ahead of Fine Gael on 31.1%. Fianna Fáil were on 25.3%, well down on 2007 figures which returned Mary Coughlan and Pat Gallagher to the 30th Dáil. Labour were on just 8.6% and will not win a seat.
Overall, it leaves Fianna Fáil truly in crisis, with Brian Cowen facing into what will be the worst election the party has ever faced. Perhaps, he should call a snap election to stop the party sliding any further. For, how far more can Fianna Fáil fall?

There has been much talk over the past 24 hours about a National Government or a National Economic Cross- Party Strategy. The idea of this revolts me. The fact that Brian Cowen has finally admitted he hasn’t a clue and needs the opposition to assist him in preparing the budget says a lot about Fianna Fáil. Naturally, one would expect the popularity of such an idea to be increasing, for Joe Duffy everyday on the airwaves speaks of the benefits of the idea. The only party which will benefit is Fianna Fáil, while all the other parties involved get scarred by the ongoing financial crisis which they will now be brought into. Fine Gael and Labour have both over the past number of years put forward opposing budgets highlighting where they would make the cuts and where they disagreed with the Government. Why is it only now, when the IMF are sharpening their knives that the Government finally decides they are worth listening too?
In my opinion all opposition parties should ignore Fianna Fáil’s proposal. It will only lengthen the term of the current Government and allow them to regain momentum in the polls by declaring that the opposition is no different to the Government. Fine Gael and Labour have Fianna Fáil on the racks and should now apply pressure to bring down one of the worst Governments in the history of this state. If it wasn’t for Labour’s childish antics last week, we may be a week closer to doing so. No one can suggest that Fianna Fáil’s banking strategy has any credibility at this stage. A quick examination of the quotes and idea’s of Brian Lenihan over the past two years confirms that.
- “This will be the cheapest bailout of any country” September 2009 … anyone who even tries to claim this at this stage should be ostracized.
- “We’re turning a corner” – December 2009… only a few months later Ireland plunges back into recession and job losses continue.
- Government policy on Anglo is the “the least worst option” October 2010. Almost 35 billion later, many of us now disagree.
- “NAMA will ensure that credit flows again to viable businesses and households by cleansing the balance sheets of Irish banks.” September 2009 Irish Banks are still not lending, the suggestion that NAMA has or will do this has been totally rubbished.
- “Residential property market will now be stabilised at a realistic level. You can now buy in confidence that the price is realistic.” April 2010. The Minister appears to think that it’s a great time to buy?
- “We are not rushing into the banks without knowing precisely what the position is in those banks” November 2008. This quote is my personal favourite. It’s the quote which clearly shows that Lenihan is out of his depth and sinking fast. For anyone to claim this man is unlike his Fianna Fail colleagues is lying, he is the came: a total chancer who has ended up in politics.
Government banking strategy has lead this state to a position where the IMF and the EU are truly now on red alert. This is a real scenario that may arise in January that may see the bond-markets reject Ireland once and for all. The fact that the ECB has admitted they are buying Irish bonds to engage demand is signalling that it’s purely a demand issue at this stage. Therefore once the Government falls, a new Government is required to lead Ireland out of this fiscal, economic and moral crisis. Fine Gael, Labour and any other opposition parties must remain totally clear of the debris when this horrific Government falls. Ireland needs new Government, not an opposition settling for second place.
Kenny Announces New Shadow-Shadow Cabinet October 4, 2010

Enda Kenny has announced his new list of deputy spokespersons. It contains a promotion for Lucinda Creighton to Immigration, Integration and Equality. It has placed Brian Hayes and Damien English as the new deputy finance team to assist Michael Noonan. Notable absentees include Waterford TD John Deasy and Cork South West deputy Jim O’Keeffe. Also absent, as expected, is Paddy Sheehan who was sacked recently over his alcohol incident. Kieran O’Donnell has been moved aside to Enterprise and Employment to join up once again with Richard Bruton. Michael Creed has been given the odd portfolio of European Affairs. (Does the man know what Europe is?) Meanwhile Dan Neville retains the portfolio of Mental Health. In a disappointing move John O’Mahony is given the role of “Sport”. This now means that of the three deputies in Mayo, all three have either a junior or senior shadow ministry. This compares to the many constituencies such as Cork South West which now lie totally without any form of portfolio representation. The Government may have forgotten about CSW a long time ago, but surely Enda Kenny hasn’t already? (Before the election even!) Noel Coonan gets CAP reform, which surely should have gone to Michael Creed?
The position of Irish Diaspora is truly bizarre. I really don’t even know what to say. Why Enda Kenny see’s this as required is beyond me. If he thinks this will halt a revolt, I’m not quite sure it will work.
Naturally the list is pretty irrelevant and will matter little in the coming months. Thank God, most on the list wont be ever getting a Junior Ministry position.
The list is as follows….
Special Responsibilities Name Food & Fisheries Shane McEntee TD CAP Reform Noel Coonan TD Forestry Tom Sheahan TD Telecommunications Michael D’Arcy TD Competition and Consumer Olivia Mitchell TD Protection Gaeltacht Dinny McGinley TD Lifelong Learning Ulick Burke TD & School Transport Enterprise & Employment Kieran O’Donnell TD Local & Community Development James Bannon TD Housing Terence Flanagan TD Public Expenditure Brian Hayes TD Banking & Credit Damien English TD European Affairs Michael Creed TD Human Rights/ODA Pat Breen TD Irish Diaspora Paul Connaughton TD Primary Care & Disability Denis Naughten TD Mental Health Dan Neville TD Immigration, Integration Lucinda Creighton TD & Equality Pension & Welfare Reform Billy Timmins TD Road Safety Tom Hayes TD Sport John O’Mahony TD Assistant Whip (and Juvenile Joe Carey TD Justice) North-South Cooperation Joe McHugh TD

Fine Gael to Announce PSR Plans. September 27, 2010

Fine Gael’s Richard Bruton is putting the finishing touches to the party’s new public sector reform plans which are expected to shape how our public sector is run and managed over the next 20 years. It’s expected to contain plans as to how make cost savings while at the same time conforming to Bruton’s individual goal of having a vibrant public service. The plan contains details of how our bloated public service will be stream lined in a way that will make our public servants vibrant, flexible and motivated. Fine Gael are once again well ahead of Labour on this issue, as the Labour Party wont reveal their “Plan” on PSR until nearly Christmas. It appears that Bruton has embraced his new role in Enterprise on the Fine Gael front-bench. We all await his plan with anticipation.

I’m sure all of you are aware of the Fine Gael front bench at this stage, if not here they are:
- Enda Kenny – Leader
- Sean Barrett – Foreign Affairs
- Richard Bruton – Enterprise, Jobs & Economic Planning (including public service reform)
- Catherine Byrne – Older Citizens
- Simon Coveney – Transport
- Deirdre Clune – Innovation & Research
- Jimmy Deenihan – Tourism, Culture & Sport
- Andrew Doyle – Agriculture, Fisheries & Food
- Frank Feighan – Community, Equality & Gaeltacht Affairs
- Charlie Flanagan – Children
- Phil Hogan – Environment, Heritage & Local Government
- Paul Kehoe – Chief Whip (with responsibility for political reform)
- Michael Noonan – Finance
- Fergus O’Dowd – Education & Skills
- John Perry – Small Business
- James Reilly – Deputy Leader & Health & Children, (with responsibility for policy coordination & implementation)
- Michael Ring – Social Protection
- Alan Shatter – Justice & Law Reform
- David Stanton – Defence
- Leo Varadkar – Communications & Natural Resources
So what’s the reaction? Well I can’t see anyone jumping with excitement! Nevertheless, many of my predictions were accurate. For the record I had 13 of the faces right! (Out of 19 positions) However my shadow cabinet contained several people who seem to have been totally ignored: Lucinda Creighton, Terrence Flanagan, John Deasy, Brian Hayes.. Naturally I accept that Flanagan is more suited to Deputy Finance spokesperson, but as O’Donnell hasn’t got anything it looks like his talent is being left idle once again. That is a very bad move by Kenny. He is forcing his youth to either do a Lucinda Creighton on it or disappear into the political wilderness. Lucinda herself is once again overlooked. Many might suggest this is because Kenny feels she would then be the instigator of a second push in the Autumn when Fine Gael collapses in the polls. As true as that may be, she is more talented then Catherine Byrne or Deirdre Clune. But no one said that talent had anything to do with politics! John Deasy was once again overlooked. Kenny has now overlooked him for over a decade. Yes, I completely agree that he couldn’t have been on the front bench up to this point but now I feel that Kenny is playing a risky game. There is nothing more dangerous than an angry backbencher and Deasy has right to be exactly that. However the most high profiler dropped from cabinet was Brian Hayes. It’s very unclear exactly what he did during the heave but it must have been bad! Kenny has replaced him with Fergus “snooze” O’Dowd. When keeping in mind this is the education post we are talking about, that is truly a shocking call. Revenge is a dish best served cold I hear… but when one remembers that O’Dowd was the first to publicity defy Kenny, it’s a very odd call.
One move I find very odd is the fact that he has more or less ended the political career of Olwyn Enright. Her constituency has been redrawn and she is expected to lose her seat to Labour. Hence I was quite sure that she would be spared and Charles “boredom” Flanagan would be consigned to the back benches. Kenny has gone the opposite way around, saving Flanagan for a very unclear reason. Either way Enright now has a lot of time to try to save her seat, if she even realises she is in trouble! One interesting point which should be highlighted is how Richard Bruton’s role is ever so similar to his previous one. His title is “Enterprise, Jobs & Economic Planning (including public service reform)”… the only change is that jobs is now a more centered focus and the banking system a little less. However for Kenny to include one of Bruton’s personal goals of public sector reform is an astute move, some could even say clever. Equally the appointment of Michael Noonan to Finance itself was expected and he signaled that he will continue the way Bruton left off.
Personally I find the idea of Michael Ring in social protection as slightly confusing. Initially I was shocked. One of my colleagues asked me if I needed a lie down! I simply struggled to get my head around it. However slowly I began to understand. It was one of those moments where the clouds lifted and I could see again. I have come to the conclusion that it actually may be a pretty good move by Kenny. My reason for suggesting this is simple. In my predictions blog, I mentioned how social protection will be massive in the coming months and that the biggest opposition party needed a heavy hitter, someone who will tackle and attack the Government with little care for the consequences. The role required an individual who has an opinion and is not afraid to make it heard. To quote it: “…However what this role requires is someone to put the Government on the rack and challenge Labour’s soundbite’s…” For this reason I suggested Lucinda Creighton. However in many respects Michael Ring is a very similar choice except that he is seasoned by about 30 years! He has the ability to shout and condemn and may do a great job. Nevertheless only time will tell as to whether he can provide substance to his commentary and score some points for Fine Gael outside of Mayo.
One interesting point which the media has ignored is that fact that certain portfolios have been dropped from the front bench including Immigration. The portfolio was held by Denis Naughton, (who has now been left to the hounds in the back benches) but is no longer regarded as important enough for the front bench. From glancing at the Fine Gael website it’s unclear if it has been scrapped totally or if it is now a back bench position. Equally, Innovation has now been promoted to the front bench and with it Cork’s Deirdre Clune. I reported earlier this week that she was in line for promotion. She is now officially the best dressed lady on the Fine Gael front bench clearly ahead of newly promoted Catherine Byrne who must have been totally shocked to her promotion as she was dressed almost as bad as Calamity Coughlan. However she must be more than a pretty face over the next 2 years if Fine Gael is to taken seriously as an economic powerhouse.
Overall this is a mixed front bench. The next election is just 96 weeks away. This bench is not the mix of youth and experience that Kenny claims it is. Far from it. The absence of Terrence Flanagan, Brian Hayes, John Deasy, Olwyn Enright, Damian English, Joe Carey and Lucinda Creighton is regrettable. One would have expected more of the above to be sitting on the front bench and less of the Deenihan’s, Barrett’s and Feighan’s. This is an old-looking front bench which has a massive job to do. Hopefully they realise the job that must be done and how to do it. It’s very clear that up to recently the senior party has had no idea as to the fact that in many constituencies gains are unlikely unless they actually get off their asses and onto the streets. Is the message sinking through? Let’s ask that question in a few months. Personally, I believe the party is in free fall. Hopefully backroom team members like Frank Flannery will start to put pressure on people like Paddy Sheehan and find out his intentions for the 31st Dáil. Otherwise seats are being lost quickly in Cork South West and elsewhere. A new front bench is a start, substance must now follow. Nevertheless the return of the Varadkar’s and Bruton’s will do no harm and should help keep Kenny his job. But seriously what was with the red tie’s today?

Ready to lead?
